Say Good Bye to Resistance – Hello Action!

by Diane Sweeney on June 24, 2013

The failure to act is much more often the product of inner, emotional resistance than external resistance.” – Dan Kennedy

 Pad of Paper & Pen

How many times have you said you would make some habit change, and then find an excuse not to?

It is instinctive to take the easier path to the next goal, but often that path leads to another easy path, and you find that you’ve followed the bricks back to where you started! Nothing accomplished, no rewards, just the same old, same old!

We are resistant to change because we think it is too hard or we will look foolish. How many times have you done something that you envisioned as difficult, and then when accomplished, felt so good afterward? A difficult test in school, a climb up a mountainside that you thought was going to be just an easy walk, taking care of an aging parent. Or those situations where we thought we would look foolish? We have those voices in our heads that made us, as a teenager, hesitant to ask someone to prom or, as a young adult, reluctant to raise our hand in a business seminar to ask a question. Then we find out afterwards that the person wanted to go to prom with us and everyone in the room had the same question!

At some point in our lives, self-consciousness took over and we became hesitant to push back for fear of losing part of oneself! But think of all the great ideas, products and processes that would have never come to be if no one wanted to take that plunge!

So what is it that is holding you back?

Don’t hesitate another minute! Right now, grab a pen and paper and write down the top 3 things you want to see happen in your life. Be very, very specific so that the action you need to take is very apparent, instead of overwhelming to you.

Most of us start with a list of broad subjects:

  1. Lose 10 pounds
  2. Start looking for a new job
  3. Eating Healthier

But, today, instead, make them bit more specific:

  1. Lose 2 pounds this week
  2. Rewrite my resume
  3. Eat more veggies

Then you can write down an action or two you can take NOW to make it happen:

  1. Take two 30 minute walks this week and eat a salad (with protein) for lunch every day
  2. Add your current work responsibilities to your old resume; look at 3 websites to understand current formats and layouts. Or find a resume writer at or
  3. Go to store, purchase 3 of your favorite vegetables. Look on line for new ways to cook them. Eat them each day this week. And don’t let them rot!!

If these three things were your list, you can see how you can easily fit in these three action steps this week. Then you do the same for next week, and/or build onto the next step.

Changes in habit do not happen all at once, nor do they happen overnight. But step by step, they do happen!

Are you ready this week to take the next step in to feeling good? To stepping into the life you were meant to live? Take action today!

Comment below to tell me the action you are going to take today! We are here to support one another!
